The process of drug detoxification differs from one person to another. Some drug detox requires the use of a carefully selected medicine in the treatment of addictions. This type of drug detox, known as substitute drug method, is usually administered in lieu of the drugs the patients have already been taking and have grown addicted to. While this process can successfully lead the way to complete recovery from drug addictions, some health professionals still warn that this can also lead to another form of addiction. Another type of detox is rapid drug detoxification, which is administered in some residential drug treatment centers and typically shortens the detox period by three days. This type is used among patients with severe addiction problems and those who exhibit severe withdrawal symptoms from drugs. During this process, the patient is put under general anesthesia and injected with strong drugs to help flush out toxins. This is a physically stressing detox process that should not be practiced at home.

Growing up in a suburb outside of Boston, my friends and I every winter counted on several snow days. Once we detected a flake in the sky we would go to find out about the weather. Was it a storm? How many feet? Will there be ice? Black ice was the best because this made the driving conditions very dangerous and was a clear indicator that school would be canceled. Some towns like Wellesley had a fleet of a couple hundred snow plows. This meant that school was rarely canceled for Wellesley students. I can remember watching the morning news and seeing the canceled school list ticket at the bottom of the screen. Once I saw my school’s name my neighbor and I would get together and plan sledding, or skating, or hot chocolate drinking events. Now that I live in Southern California, it saddens me to think the kids never really experienced snow days. Sure they may have had fog days, but that is pretty much a day wasted were you are restricted to stay inside. Snow days to New Englanders are shared and understood, it is a time to jump into a couple of feet of fresh snow and enjoy the fact that is all you can really do.
