Alcoholism can be fatal. Alcoholic beverages such as beer, wines and spirits contain strong chemicals which can alter the body’s natural processes and may eventually put the whole life of a person at risk. This disease, characterized by strong compulsion to alcohol, can cause disorders of the liver, gastrointestinal problems, cardiovascular illnesses, diabetes complication, sexual dysfunction and interrupted menstruation among women. It can also cause birth defects or fetal alcohol syndrome, neurological complications and increased risks of cancer.
Alcoholism also results to complications such as domestic abuse and divorce, poor performance in school or at work, increased likelihood of vehicular accidents, greater susceptibility to accidental injuries and higher incidence of suicide and murder.
Undoubtedly, alcoholic needs immediate alcohol treatment from rehab centers that provide treatment programs for alcoholics. Treatment program may be inpatient or outpatient, depending on the severity of alcoholism.
An individual needs alcohol detox regardless of the severity of his alcoholism. Detox is a process of removing traces of harmful substances from the body and is to be done within detox centers that are specially built to provide detoxification. A detox center is usually run by health professionals who offer skilled nursing interventions, counseling and motivation for recovery.
The family plays a very important role in treating alcoholism among family members. In fact, the family is expected to be at the core behind an alcoholic’s recovery from alcoholism. It is the family who is expected to provide the most support throughout the alcohol treatment.
Individuals in need of alcohol treatment are often times in denial of their problem. There are alcoholic individuals who, despite seeing the various signs and symptoms of alcoholism, do not submit themselves to alcohol rehab centers until such time that the worse has already set in. As a result, alcoholism worsens and treatment becomes tricky.
Family intervention is strongly encouraged by health professionals from all alcohol rehab centers. The family’s support can help alcoholics cope up with the ill-effects of alcoholism and will also motivate these individuals to seek complete treatment and recovery. This will also encourage long term abstinence from alcohol.
Family intervention is not simply a confrontation of existing addictions. If confrontation is the sole concept of intervention, then such intervention is bound to fail. Alcoholic persons like those who have substance abuse problems, need reassurance, love and support from family members. These addicts do not need blame and rejection; otherwise they would not be motivated to seek treatment from any of the rehab centers.

Last year after I passed out on a sidewalk and nearly broke my nose, I decided it was time that I look into getting alcohol treatment. At the time that I began looking for treatment I was 18 and had been drinking for 5 years. Everyone in my family drank heavily and while I have a history of alcoholism it was just written of as the “partying gene.” I knew I had to go to a detox center but I wanted to make sure it was one where I would not be the youngest person there. I also decided I wanted to do inpatient rehab to ensure that I get sober. I am now 22 years old, my entire four years at college I did not drink alcohol. I am one of the few Americans to say they had a sober 21st birthday, and while this may sound lame I can honestly say alcohol treatment changed my life.
