Substance abuse and alcoholism are diseases that undoubtedly require treatment from rehabilitation. These diseases which are characterized by an uncontrollable impulse to illicit substances and alcoholic beverages positions the life of an addicted individual at risk of various health complications and even death when not given the right treatment.

That with a family member who is suffering from any of these probably understands now how addiction takes its tool on the lives of drug alcohol addicts. Addictions have psychobiological effects on the body and can cause a string of medical consequences. It also ruins relationships in the family and in between friends while at the same time putting work and studies at great risk.

Treatment centers like California drug rehabs provide various treatment programs for those in need of addiction treatment. Treatment programs vary from one person to the other depending on the severity of an existing addiction. Those with long term addiction problems are usually advised to go through inpatient rehabilitation while others who may have just started their vice may possibly go for outpatient treatment.

Addictions can kill. Don’t wait till another life is lost to any of these diseases. If you know any one whom you suspect to have addiction problems, intervene. If you think you cannot fully convince these persons to seek professional help, there are professionals and agencies whoa re always willing and ready to provide intervention services.

Substance Abuse among Teens

Recent statistics of drug abuse continue to disclose an upward trend of substance abuse cases among teenagers. This is an alarming fact that required immediate action from all stakeholders in the community.

Families need to initiate drug intervention among family members who have fallen prey to addictions and the government has to intensify its drive in promoting subsidized treatment programs to individuals in need of drug treatment. Doing so will help curb drug-related incidences, disabilities, and even death.

A very recent survey on teen drug abuse in America reveals that one in very four children uses Ecstasy; 6.4% of Americans age 12 and older are either using illicit drugs or prescription drugs.

Like most drug addicts, teenagers with drug problems are in denial of their addictions and their need for immediate drug treatment. Some health practitioners also overlooks the possible existence of drug abuse among these individuals, hence they remain untreated.

Teenagers with drug problems exhibit several signs of drug addiction. For one thing, persons with drug problems are more likely to have difficulty in finances; they have poor judgment; are often involved in accidents, and; are frequently absent or late in school/ work.

Individuals with possible drug problems have increased incidence of health problems; have poor diet and sleep disturbances, and; may also exhibit withdrawal signs when not taking drugs.

In addition to this, addicted individuals also tend to be emotionally unstable, irritable, impatient, and lonesome. This person is also likely to be defensive when questioned about his/ her drug abuse problem.
